Not a true Bonsai but can be trained from seedling. The overall height of this tree is classified as Miniature Prunus avium or the Sweet Cherry is a straight trunked, deciduous tree that produces lush displays of white, spring blossom, that are followed by small round, shiny, red, delicious fruit.
They are easy to grow and have oval, pointed leaves around 10 cms long with serrated edges which will turn to rich shades of orange in autumn.
Cherries have hermaphrodite flowers so are able to be self pollinated by bees.
They take two to three years to reach fruiting capacity after planting and seven years to reach maturity.
Cherries are excellent for attracting birds and insects - though you may want to put netting over them as the fruits ripen so the birds don't eat them all.
Cherry Tree (Bonsai) (Delicious Prunus Avium)
Soil: Grows well in most soils from sandy through to clay, but does like it well drained with added organic matter.
Can be propagated by budding or grafting.
Don't bother trying to grow fro the pit - it can be done but grafted cherries are much more reliable.
Maintenance: Beware of disturbing the roots as they will produce suckers very easily. If they surface in your lawn then add a layer of soil so the mower won't damage them.
Harvest when ripe in mid summer in dry weather, picking the fruits by the stems to avoid bruising.
